Illustrating the second Antiphon of the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. God the Father at the top. Below is Emmanuel in a circle supported by angels; a scroll is in his left hand and in his right hand are the symbols of the four evangelists. Angels at left and right, architectural background. Above, two flying angels holding discs picturing images of seraphs. At lower right, death rides out of a dark cave on a lion. At lower left is a cross on which Christ robed as a warrior is seated, symbolizing His victory over death. Below him an angel overcomes Hades. Ex. John Lockhart, Jr. Collection.
