This Crewel bed cover, made for Chloe R. Gidings by Susanna Thompson, Winfield, 1826, is one of a small number of similarly designed examples created in Massachusetts and New York. Chloe Gidings was the wife of John Stow, who settled in Chautauqua. Stow came from Herkimer County, NY, where Winfield is a town. Related examples are in the collections of American Museum of Folk Art, Henry Ford Museum, Colonial Williamsburg and the Wadsworth Atheneum. |
