Sgn. Lower right, Hanington 1874. Oil on canvas. The horse, Index, was prominent at the Saratoga Springs races in the 1870's. The horse and painting belonged to the prominent family of New York industrialist, Chauncey Kilmer (1845-1884). Index was the subject of an article in the Saratogian newspaper, September 1, 1873. The reporter noted that "Index was the finest example of a stallion that I have ever seen." |
