Lot #: 165 Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997) "Modern Painting in Porcelain" |
Sgn. on reverse, rf Lichtenstein, 3/6. Porcelain enamel on steel. Utilizing various colors, lines and forms to create an abstract composition in his trademark pop art style, Lichtenstein creates a design at once iconically familiar and elusive in reading. The strong upward diagonal thrust of lines and wing-shaped forms race outward from arched rays of blue and red in the lower right corner, perhaps stylistically reminiscent of an airplane's altimeter. The intersections of curves and lines convey a sense of motion and energy, in contrast to the artwork's static two-dimensional form and medium, and characteristic of Lichtenstein's odes to classic American mid-century pop and graphic art. |
