Lot #: 203 Rare Josef Albers (American, 1888-1976) Glass & Brushed Aluminum Light Box Modern Sculpture |
Artist monogrammed in glass. Machine engraved and encased in metal light box to illuminate the two dimensional geometric abstraction on glass with subtle gradation of color. Part of Alber’s series, Structural Constellations, the design is both a departure and extension of the artist’s earlier series, the celebrated Homage to the Square paintings. Following his education at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, Albers began his artistic career as a stained glass designer, but rarely used the medium following his emigration to the United States. This rare Albers work beautifully illustrates the artist’s ongoing exploration of color’s affect on the viewer’s perception of form and space. The same design is found on a similar untitled work, machine engraved on Resopal (laminate), dating to 1966, and measuring 7.9 x 10.6 cm. © Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, shown at Galerie Berinson (Berlin, Germany) in their show, “Joseph Albers (1888-1976): Paintings, Drawings, Prints” January 28-May 19, 2012. |
