Lot #: 85 Aldro Thompson Hibbard (American, 1886-1972) "The Baseball Painting" |
Oil on canvas. Signed ‘A. T. Hibbard’ (lower left). Catalogue Note: “His West and Winhall river canvases are among the most spectacular Vermont pieces. One, painted in the early Thirties, became famous in the family, which calls it the “baseball picture,” and with good reason. The large surface is filled with the West River’s dark snow hills, the stream winding into the foreground around the nose of a bridge, and vanishing off the other edge. A few spruces and birches give intimacy to a vast scene. Sun touches a bank of the river, but late afternoon is imminent and the viewer feels the approach of twilight. Use of the “S” curve in the design creates rhythm; vertical lines maintain tempo by their spacing, and the artist skillfully take the viewer across the canvas; the eye never is allowed to leave it.” Literature: John L. Cooley, “A.T. Hibbard: Artist in Two Worlds,” Concord, Massachusetts,1968. p. 101. |
