Hamburg 1675, 10 Duecats. German States, Hamburg gold 10 Duecats (Portugalöser) 1675. Harbour and city-scape of Hamburg, A TE FUNDATAM DEUS URBEM PROTEGE DEXTRA, the name of Jevovah above, HAMBURG beneath. Reverse Military fleet. These impressive medallic gold coins, issued by the great banking city of Hamburg, were created to the standard of a Portuguese gold 10 duecats. They were produced from the 1550s for the purpose of international trade, and by this point they had become presentation pieces and collectors items hence their very ellaborate design. A similar example can be found in the British Museum, SSB,76.31. from the collection of Sarah Sopia Banks. 49.5 mm. 34.7 g. |
