Mahogany case with unusual flat carved pilasters, carved crest with winged griffins and foliage and paw feet with nice deep, rich patina. Extremely rare, reverse painted tablet depicting Lafayette, flags, banners & drums; outstretched eagle with banner reading "E. Pluribus Unum" and another banner reading "May the sons of Columbia never forget the friend of their fathers, General Lafayette." Original signed and painted iron dial. 8 day time and strike brass movement. Nice, clean Lucius B. Bradley, Watertown, CT, label. This clock is believed to commemorate Lafayette's visit to the US in 1824-1825. |
