Levi Wells Prentice (American, 1851-1935)
Born 18 December 1851, Levi Wells Prentice spent his early life on a farm in Lewis County, New York. A self-taught artist, Prentice found inspiration in the Adirondack Mountains, where he traveled and painted as a young man. In 1875, he opened his first studio as a landscape artist in Syracuse, New York. In 1883, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he began painting still life fruit, for which he is best known. Prentice died 28 November 1935 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He is remembered for his skillful rendering of color, form, and texture, as well as the quality of illusionism. His works reside in numerous private collections and museums, including the New York State Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
