Georges Spiro (Polish/ French, 1909-1994)
Georges Spiro was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1909. He arrived in France in 1942, where he began to collaborate with a furniture manufacturer who created articulated toys and in his spare time, he painted gouaches. Spiro served in the French army, and later became a French citizen. During the war, his wife died in a concentration camp and was separated from all his relatives. In 1946, he met up with his brother, a Buchenwald concentration camp survivor, in London. He managed to exhibit ten of his works in London, where he sold almost everything and decided to become a full-time painter. By 1949, Spiro had exhibited in London, Paris, and New York. His surreal images with painted with realistic detail and techniques. Even when Spiro painted the incomprehensible, he retains us by the luminosity and range of his colors. Self-taught, Spiro devoted himself wholeheartedly to the tendencies of surrealism.
