Anthony Thieme (Dutch/American, 1888-1954)
Anthony Thieme was a landscape and marine painter and major figure of the Rockport (MA) School of American Regional Art. He studied at the Academie of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and briefly at the Royal Academy in The Hague. He traveled widely in Europe and frequently found work as a stage designer. When he moved to the United States, he quickly found work as a stage designer at the Century Theatre in New York, designing sets for the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. He discontinued working as a stage designer in 1928 and make his living with the sales of paintings and etchings. He eventually established the Thieme School of art and exhibited his work frequently at the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York. He traveled widely, where he painted en plein air; Mexico, Guatemala, Florida, and France were frequented destinations.
