Titled & Sgn., "The West Wind, T.R. Gould, Inv. En Fecit, Florence, 1874." A Private Rochester, NY, Estate. Thomas Ridgeway Gould’s, “The West Wind” marble sculpture was the embodiment of America’s westward expansion. The original sculpture was made in 1870, and being so popular, Gould carved seven additional sculptures in two sizes. All of the sculptures were carved in Gould’s studio in Florence, Italy. One of the seven sculptures was displayed at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Similar example in the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY.
