Toko Shinoda (Japanese, 1913-2021)
Toko Shinoda was a Japanese artist best known for her abstract sumi ink paintings and prints. Shinoda’s oeuvre was predominantly executed using the traditional means and media of East Asian calligraphy, but her resulting abstract ink paintings and prints express a nuanced visual affinity with the bold black brushstrokes of mid-century Abstract Expressionism. Her work in the field of calligraphy and abstract art propelled her to radicalize the traditional medium by pushing abstraction and dynamism to the extreme. Shinoda’s work was shown not only in calligraphy exhibitions but in exhibitions of abstract art. By crossing the boundaries between calligraphy and Western-style modern art, she invented her own field.
