Details:
Alexandre DeFaux (French, 1826-1900)
Born in Berey, Alexandre DeFaux is primarily recognized as a Barbizon landscape artist. After studying under the famed Corot, DeFaux made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1859. His oils and watercolors were praised for the delicate style he used in their execution, and the sentimentality and charmed expressed with the authentic depiction of light and nuance. Unlike his teacher, Camille Corot, Alexandre DeFaux expressed his interest in the Barbizon landscape as opposed to the two peasants and farmers who worked the land. Much of the time he spent painting in the countryside surrounding Normandy and the forests of Fountainbleau.
Farmstead in Normandy beautifully exhibits DeFaux's subtleties and delicacy in brushwork and sensitivity to light and value. The scene depicts a quaint farmstead cozily nestled next to a meadow stream. Flocks of geese, chicken and ducks gather at the water's edge for a drink or swim. During Alexandre DeFaux's lifetime, he was awarded numerous medals, including medals from the Paris Salon in 1874 and 1879. In 1900, at the end of his life, he was awarded the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle. In 1881, he was decorated with the Legion of Honor.
