Details:

Henry Chase (American, 1853-1889)
Chase resided in, painted in and exhibited at the National Academy of New York. In 1878, his work was shown at the Mechanics Fair in Boston and in 1883, he was elected as an associate to the National Academy of Design, New York; however, Henry Chase was one of those unfortunate artists to meet an untimely end to his flourishing career. At the age of only 36, he prematurely reached the end of his life.
This painting is a fine example of the work and skill of Henry Chase, known also as "Harry". As is common among the 19th century painters, Chase pursued an education in Europe. He studied in the atelier of Sayer in Paris and in The Netherlands at The Hague. It is perhaps this time spent in The Netherlands that gave birth to his predilection for marine paintings. Undoubtedly, Chase possessed a fine ability to articulate the beauty of the ever changing sea, as in Toil at the Close of Day.
