Catalog Note: Originally related to the coups system of war honors among Plains warriors, roaches were made from deer, horse, badger, turkey neck, and porcupine guard hairs, which were entwined in a cock's comb effect. During the second half of the 19th century, this form of headdress spread from Eastern tribes to the Plains.
