Late 19th cent. Sgn. On base E. Lansere, 1885. Cast by Chopin. A mounted warrior wearing a helmet and chain mail, carrying a banner, sword & bow, axe hanging at his side. Eugene Lanceray, was a talented Russian sculptor, painter, illustrator and maker of mosaics. From 1892-1896, Lanceray studied in St. Petersburg, and then in Paris from 1896-1899. Lanceray’s bronzes unite a large flowing picturesque composition with attention to detail in accessories; the chain armor, the head-trappings of the horse, and the stamped leather, are worked up with care. A Bronze Group of a Bogatyr represents one of the heroic figures in Russian history, who at the close of the battle still holds the standard safe, though with weary hands, and a frame faint with the fierce labors of the day. His armor is half covered by a magnificent mantle, stiff with embroidery, and he holds the great banner in his arms, embracing it, and half hiding his helmeted head in its folds.
