Naum Gabo was born in Bryansk, Russa in 1890 as Naum Pevsner. He later changed his last name to Gabo to avoid confusion with his brother, the painter Antoine Pevsner. During the early 1900's, he and his brother traveled all over Europe working, studying art and attending school. In 1915, Gabo began making abstract constructions that became known for their beauty and simplicity. In 1920, with brother Antoine Pevsner, Gabo produced the "Realistic Manifesto", outlining the tenets of pure constructivism. He later married Miriam Israels in Cornwall, England and soon after WWII, Gabo moved to the US, where he became an American citizen in 1952 and continued his work as an artist. He became Professor of the Graduate School of Architecture at Harvard University. He carried out numerous important commissions and exhibited a retrospective of his work at the Tate Gallery in 1966 and again in 1976. He died in Connecticut in 1977.
